The History of Bridge House and Its Self-Catering Cottages in Corbridge

The land where Bridge House stands is called Spinners Bank on the 1856 census of Corbridge this is where the villages thriving Georgian textile industry was based.

Before that date in 1735 a daughter of smithy Thomas Cutter found a silver salver in the river that was sold by her father for £30 guineas and 36 shillings (more than £4000 today). The salver was sold at auction in 1992 for £1.9m.

The Coach House and The Stable were built around 1750 and were a stopping off place for coaches that travelled from London to Scotland. The land was owned by the Winship family who owned The Angel since 1610 and was used to grow fruit and vegetables for The Angel’s guests.

In 1902 Bridge House was built by Dr. Noel Jackson as his doctor’s surgery.  In 1919 Noel received an M,B.E. for his work as a Medical Officer. Later the Coach House and The Stable were bought and the West Wing was built on top of the house and Quince Cottage.

After the second world war until 1973 the house was both the home and the surgery for “Doctors Gass, Basham and Hird”. By 1965 Dr. Hird was joined by Dr. Jeans. By 1972 the Doctors were Bolam, Swaddle and Harle. After that the house was a home for several families until in 2010 when we purchased the house and converted the cottages.
